AstroFox Supports Open Gaming

AstroFox Productions was founded with the intent of increasing and encouraging diversity within games and gaming. We feel that games should reflect the people who play them, enabling the differences that make each and every one of us unique to shine. We believe that through playing together, we strengthen those things that make us who we are, as individuals and collectively.

This can only happen when creators feel free and safe to create.

For those who may not know, Wizards of the Coast, a subsidiary of Hasbro Inc., and the publishers of Dungeons & Dragons, have recently taken actions that threaten the livelihoods of creators working in and around the D&D community. Given the deep roots D&D has within the TTRPG community, these actions threaten catastrophic changes for the entire industry. These changes come in the form of the potential revocation of the Open Game License (OGL) 1.0a, and its replacement with a new version of the license that would significantly restrict or impede the ability of 3

rd party creators to earn a living through the content they create.

While there are many ways to look at this, th

e TTRPG community has weathered this kind of storm before. Where creative people exist, there will be games. We will always find a way to keep playing the games we enjoy with friends and family.

AstrFox takes the stance that power cannot and should not be held in the hands of the few, much less in the hands of a single company. We happen to also be founded by a bunch of engineers with a love for Open-Source Software; from our perspect

ive, an open license such as the GNU General Public License (GPL) or the Creative Commons license suitable for the TTRPG community was both inevitable and way overdue.

To this end, we support Paizo in the creation of the Open RPG Creative License (ORC).

While we have been silent for a while, we have been busy behind the scenes developing a suite of new games, all utilizing the same base game mechanics. We always intended to publish these games with System Reference Documents (SRD) and an open and irrevocable license.

We thank the numerous members of the community who have risked their livelihood to bring us critical information while this situation continues to unfold, and we thank Paizo for spearheading efforts to create the ORC license.
